Rotary Club of Alamo

Don has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Alamo for over 30 years having served as its president 1980-1981 the year in which the club was named the outstanding club in District 5160's then 48 clubs in Northern California.
 
Rotary is an international service organization with approximately 1.2 million members in more than 32,000 clubs in over 200 countries.  The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of "service above self", to promote high ethical standards in business and professional life and to promote international understanding, goodwill and peace throughout the world.
 
Don is a Paul Harris Fellow, coordinates the club's Meals on Wheels activites and the Alamo Music & Wine Festival an annual event that supports the music program in six local schools.

Much of the proceeds go directly to 6 local schools for their music programs.  The amount varies yearly, depending on the total proceeds.

Sponsorship of the Monte Vista Interact Club
* Ms. Beth Burlingame, an Alamo Rotarian, is the club advisor
* This year about 100 MVHS students participate in service projects, both local and international (this year focusing on the International Rotary Polio Plus project) 
* Student members participate in Rotary activities and service projects
* Alamo Rotary makes an annual donation to support Internet activities; cost varies yearly

Outstanding Educator and Student Awards luncheon
Each May students and educators from the 6 local schools are honored at a luncheon where they receive a plaque and thank you for their continued support and contribution to their schools and community.  The cost of the luncheon and plaques is about $1300.00.

Dictionary Project
Each year the Alamo Rotary Club distributes a dictionary to each 3rd grader in Alamo and Rancho Romero Schools.  Approximate cost is $2,000.00.

Library Book Project
Each year $700.00 is donated to the library of Alamo, Rancho Romero or Stone Valley School, on a rotating every third year basis, to enable them to purchase books.  The school librarian selects the books to be purchased, and the Rotary Club speakers sign a book at each meeting.

Monte Vista Scholarships
Each year three scholarships, totaling $2,000.00 are given to graduating seniors.

Student Leadership Opportunities
Each year Alamo Rotary funds the cost of two students to attend the Camp Royal Student Leadership Conference for one week., and sends one or two students to Camp Venture, learning entrepreneurial skills.  Cost is approximately $1,200.00.

Easter Egg Hunt
Alamo Rotary funds this hunt for all children in the community.  Rotarians supply the eggs and prizes and have a fun morning supervising the event.  Approximate cost is $500.00.

Support for local students earning the Eagle Scout Award
Alamo Rotary honors these students through donations and recognition.  Cost varies yearly upon request.

Recognition opportunities for local students
Students receive recognition by performing at the Music Festival and  luncheon meetings, and speaking at our luncheon meetings.
